Enjoyed this festive, glittering production of Sergei Profokiev's Cinderella, presented by Singapore Ballet as part of their 35th anniversary season.

Choreographer Janek Schergen (who also plays Cinderella's father) delivers a production of lightness and grace, one which unfolds as beautifully a series of picture postcards. Eucien Chia's set brings the fairytale world to life, with grandiose set pieces that resemble giant cutouts from a storybook. Leonard Augustine Choo's costumes are a veritable riot of colour, with captivating and elegant designs that add a vibrant shimmer to the production.

In the title role, Chihiro Uchida (who alternates with Kwok Min Yi) conveys the perfect mix of vulnerability and grace, winning the audience's hearts with her elfin charm and making a fine pairing with the Prince. The two stepsisters (Tanaka Watanabe and Stephanie Joe) very nearly steal the show with their larger-than-life looks and antics - the scene where they try to 'learn' how to dance gracefully for the ball is especially hilarious. There are also impressive turns by the dancers representing the four seasons and the stars who wrap around Cinderella like an incandescent midnight blanket.

All in all, a real treat for the senses and even for someone who rarely watches ballet, this was a smooth, well-paced and thoroughly enjoyable evening brimming with all the festivity of the season. And that's a wrap for the 2023 theatre calendar!

The Crystalwords score: 4/5
